Educational Focus
Pasadena Rosebud Academy’s approach to teaching and learning is traditional in nature and is aligned with the California State Content Standards. However, our curriculum and instructional strategies are centered on the core elements of linguistics: Phonetics, phonology, morphology, orthography, syntax, semantics and text structure. Providing students with an educational experience rich in linguistics instruction gives them a superior foundation in reading, comprehension, writing, critical thinking, and problem solving. Linguistics instruction will allow students to extract meaning from the language presented to them in all core subject areas and in the world around them.
Instruction in linguistics gives students the tools that they need to extrapolate meaning from new and more complex texts. It provides continuity in all subject areas and channels a sophisticated level of learning from one grade level to the next. It is this understanding of academic language that will allow PasadenaRosebudAcademy’s students to become leaders in the highly competitive 21st Century.
Core Curriculum
LANGUAGE ARTS
Language arts is the most important subject area in grades kindergarten through third. Reading is the key that unlocks the doors to all other learning. The priority for Pasadena Rosebud Academy Charter School is to ensure that students receive a well balanced language arts program that includes reading, writing, written and oral language conventions, and listening and speaking. Keeping consistent with the California English/language arts content standards, students will engage in 2 ½ hours of language arts each day. Daily instruction will consist of skills and strategies that are connected and sequenced to ensure that mastery is developed at each stage of the learning process.
MATH
The mathematics curriculum at Pasadena Rosebud Academy will be challenging and child centered. We understand that a student’s ability to think algebraically will be a major determinant in their academic success. Therefore, our curriculum will present a balanced program of computational and procedural skills, conceptual understanding, and problem- solving. Having examined the Mathematics Framework for California Public Schools, we believe that it outlines the best scope and sequence (over grade levels) of mathematics learning for students in California.
HISTORY-SOCIAL SCIENCE
In history-social science, students will gain an understanding and appreciation for the social, economic and political dynamics that surround them. The knowledge that they gain in history-social science will provide them with the skills to function and adapt to a rapidly growing and changing world. Students will have the opportunity to connect skills and strategies learned in language arts and math.
As stated in the History-Social Science Content Standards for California Public School, students in kindergarten will be “introduced to basic spatial, temporal, and causal relationships, emphasizing the geographic and historical connections between the world today and the world long ago.”
In the first grade, students will learn and experience individual and personal rights in their classroom. They will examine current economic and geographical aspects of their lives with those of the past. Students will also examine who and what represents America.
SCIENCE
Science is the inquiry based subject. Students will explore the questions of life, earth and physical nature. The scientific method and measurement concepts will be incorporated in all three areas and coordinated with age appropriate laboratory activities. Students will learn to formulate questions, and organize thoughts and provide evidence to support their theories. State science standards are comprehensive and thorough and will guide each instructional objective.
TECHNOLOGY
The twenty-first century is the age of information. Technology is a primary source for accessing and disseminating information. Technological discoveries and applications have a huge influence on our everyday lives. It is our goal to ensure that our students become competitive forces in our rapidly growing and changing society by becoming proficient in locating, accessing, and organizing information using computers and other relevant technology.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
We believe that a healthy body leads to a healthy mind. The goal of the physical education curriculum is to supplement healthy eating habits with the appropriate physical activity. Students will develop physical coordination, fitness, and skills for sports, recreation, and social interaction. More importantly, students will develop the skills, strength, and motivation for lifelong physical activity.
